At the Stade de France, England produced an outstanding display to repeat their World Cup semi-final victory over France. Tries by Paul Sackey and Richard Wigglesworth along with fourteen points from Jonny Wilkinson saw England through to an eleven point winning margin. England’s powerful pack dominated throughout and a disappointing French side could only reply with a try from Luke Nallet, a conversion by Damien Traille and penalties from Morgan Parra and Dimitri Yachvili.
A resurgent Ireland scored five tries in a comprehensive victory over Scotland at Croke Park. Two tries from Tommy Bowe and one each from David Wallace, Rob Kearney and Marcus Horan were supplemented by Ronan O’Gara’s three conversions and one penalty. Scotland, still without a win in the competition, scored through a Simon Webster try and eight points from the boot of Chris Patterson.
Wales, still on course for the Grand Slam, continued their successful campaign under Warren Gatland with a resounding defeat of Italy at the Millennium Stadium. Lee Byrne and Shane Williams, with a brace apiece, and one from Tom Shanklin scored their tries. The kicking duties were shared by Stephen Jones, (three conversions and four penalties), and James Hook (two conversions). Italy responded with a try from Martin Castrogiovanni and a penalty from Andrea Marcato.
Wales head the table by two points from Ireland, France and England in what is proving an exciting and unpredictable tournament. The battle to avoid the wooden spoon seems to rest between Italy and Scotland.
The next round of fixtures on March 8/9 sees the top two meet with Wales travelling to Croke Park to play Ireland, Scotland and England battling for the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield and France looking to restore some pride with the visit of Italy to the Stade de France.
The final set of fixtures will take place on Saturday 15 March 2008.
